5 Lessons about Love from John 13

Happy Valentines’s Day! Today is a day set aside to appreciate our loved ones and that’s why it’s so special! I wanted to share some principles about love with you guys! Today’s blog is based on John 13 and shares some life changing truths about God’s love & the love we should have for others. Enjoy!

1.) Perfect love is eternal & consistent

In John 13:1 it says, “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.”

This verse shows us how Christ loves the world eternally & without fault. A love like this is powerful! This type of love doesn’t depend on the receiver or their actions; it is consistently shown.

2.) Love takes action

John 13 is all about Jesus getting ready to be crucified for our sins. Jesus didn’t have to die on the cross. He chose to willingly offer himself as a sacrifice because he loved us! This shows us that love isn’t merely a feeling, it is also characterized by actions.

3.) Nothing is “too good” for love

In verse 3 Jesus gets up and begins to wash the disciples feet. To help you better understand why this is so important, I’ve inserted a note from the ESV MacArthur Study Bible.

“The dusty and dirty conditions of the region necessitated the need for footwashing. Although the disciples would have likely been willing to wash Jesus’ feet, they would not consider washing each other’s feet. In their society, footwashing was a task assigned to the lowest-ranking household salves. It was not an action performed by a peer, except possibly as a rare expression of profound love.”

Okay, so here we see an awesome example of how humble Jesus’ Love was! His love was public and he was not ashamed of it.

4.) Our love should imitate Jesus’ love

In verse 34 we are told, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

These examples of Jesus’ perfect love are in the Bible to instruct us and change us. We need to actually apply this to our lives!

5.) As Christians we are to be known by our love

John 13:35 says, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

We are to follow Christ’s example of love & let it change us to the point that we’re known by it. This principle challenges me to love when I want to judge, to forgive when I want revenge, and to embrace people when I want to push them away.

This Valentine’s Day I hope you walk away encouraged by the overflowing love of Christ for us & the perfect example set for us! Thanks for reading!
